Wives pour cold water on aspirants’ political dream in MCD poll 2022
A Batla House resident, who moves around in the locality as a social activist, nursing dream of become a political leader. And when the MCD elections dates were announced he was elated to try his luck like many other activists in Okhla. But his political dream couldn’t be fulfilled as his wife declined to contest the poll after Zakir Nagar ward was reserved for women.
There are many like him in Okhla. Several aspirants never introduced their wife in the public waiting for the ticket. This particular activist told the OT that he was all ready to try his luck but his wife vehemently declined to contest the poll. Now, I have to wait for another five years, he said.
Another aspirant too shared the same story. He said despite doing his best to convince his wife, she didn’t agree and hence he had no other chance but to wait for another five years when the seat turns general. If some candidates are independent and educated many are contesting election under the shadow of their husbands, said one resident.
In Okhla, particularly Muslim-dominated Jamia Nagar, according to local political observers, there are leaders in every street, who without doing any ground work, dream of becoming locality representatives. Some among them move around for years as activists trying to impress upon residents that they have nothing to do with politics and they are just there to serve the people but once they get chance they take plunge into politics, said another political observer, adding that there is nothing wrong in it but at least these people should work for the development of the locality.
The MCD election for the 250 wards of the MCD is to be held on December 4, 2022. The last date to nominate was November 14.
