Jamiaiites upset as Urdu goes missing from Jamia’s centenary gate

The main concern for many is that The Centenary Gate is not written in Urdu. Reacting on a video posted by the OT, a netizen wrote: “The gate is looking good. Then the name should have been written in Urdu also.”

The tender for the gate located close to the English Department boundary was floated on July 30, 2021. The exact cost of the gate is not known. The gate was planned as Jamia born in 1920 completed its 100 years.

It is understood that the gate will be inaugurated and thrown open for the students on the Convocation day or before that. Besides, there are several gates on the campus.

It is important to point out that work for the gate is still going on and what changes and additions are to be made to it are yet not known, said a source, adding that it is too early to jump to any conclusion.

Senior journalist Munne Bharti who is also head of Okhla Press Club urged people to retweet and amplify the message of missing Urdu from the centenary gate so that changes could be made.

Jamia will hold its Centenary Year Convocation on 23rd July, 2023 for students who passed out in the Academic Years 2019 and 2020 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar will be the Chief Guest of the Convocation and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will Chair the convocation.

Jamia Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar called on Pradhan to invite him to Chair the Centenary Year Convocation.

During the meeting, she also made a mention of her proposal for the establishment of a medical college at Jamia.
