Fury over garbage piling-up on road in Shaheen Bagh, AFE and area stinking

Residents and daily commuters have been left furious over a disgusting amount of rubbish piling up on roadsides in Abul Fazal Enclave and Shaheen Bagh. They said when the garbage is not lifted daily they start piling up and at times spill over on one side of the road causing hardship to residents as the whole area stinks.

The smell is so strong that it is hard to even cross the road, said a resident, adding that what is shocking is that no effort is made by the local representatives, including the MLA and ex-Councillor, to get it cleaned.

Residents said since garbage started being dumped on the main road at Shaheen Bagh and AFE the problem started with no solution at sight for years. A resident said whenever there is election time leaders and self-proclaimed activists nursing political ambition raise hue and cry, doing little on the ground to get the perennial issue addressed. The worst part is that garbage is dumped in the open in front of a big mosque in Shaheen Bagh and nearby a religious organisation with one hospital and school located very close by, said a resident on the condition of anonymity.

The OT video of the AFE garbage piled-up on roadsides solicited several comments with many netizens tagging the post to Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan and former Councillor Wajid Khan urging them to get the mess addressed. One netizen wrote: “Where are Okhla’s social workers who regularly post photos on FB while cleaning Okhla’s garbage.”

“This shows the apathy of the local population and their leaders across party lines and they are nothing by garbage…they don’t feel ashamed of such pile-ups in the locality,” wrote Anwer Ahsan.

Some pointed out that if a few leaders, who frittered away crore of rupees on posters, parties and other sources on self-promotion during the MCD poll, had spent some money on buying and putting wheelie bins then the issue of garbage mess could have been resolved.
