The 75-year-old Anwar for years was denied the premiership. He was deputy prime minister in the 1990s and the official prime minister-in-waiting in 2018.

Sharing a few old photos of his with Anwar, senior journalist A U Asif wrote: “Dr Anwar Ibrahim, second from left in the last two photos with Justice A M Ahmadi and Dr Manzoor Alam, marking the release of A U Asif’s book Empowerment of Muslims in India thru Information and Communication by Al Ehram Chief Editor (in Arabic dress).”

After being sworn in as prime minister before the king in Kuala Lumpur, he told a news conference: “I will not tolerate corruption and abuses … None should be marginalised under my administration. This is a national unity government. All are welcome, on condition you accept the fundamental rules of good governance, no corruption and Malaysia for all Malaysians.”
