Jamia engineering student arrested by NIA for sending cryptocurrency to IS, family terms charges false

The arrest of a youth from Batla House two days ago is talk of town after the media flashed the news. Several dailies and online portal reported today that the arrested youth is an engineering student of Jamia Millia Islamia.

University officials, including the PRO, didn’t pick up the call to confirm the development. Their version will be updated once they issue any statement.

According to Hindustan Times report, a student of Jamia, Mohsin Ahmad, 22, has been arrested for alleged links with the Islamic State, the National Investigation Agency said on Sunday. The arrest was made from Batla House after a raid, claimed media reports.

“NIA conducted search in the residential premises of accused Mohsin Ahmad and subsequently arrested him in the case pertaining to online and on-ground activities of ISIS,” the central agency said in a statement.

“Ahmad is a radicalised and active member of ISIS. He has been arrested for his involvement in collection of funds for ISIS from sympathisers in India as well as abroad. He was sending these funds to Syria and other places in form of cryptocurrency in order to further the activities of ISIS,” the statement said.

Further investigations in the case are underway, NIA said.

The HT reported that Ahmad, a native of Patna, was living in the Batla House area of Delhi and is enrolled in the second year of the electrical engineering course at Jamia.

Aam Aadmi Party Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan tweeted over the issue. “The arrest of Jamia student Mohsin by the NIA is completely wrong and unconstitutional. BJP and RSS have found a new way to malign and harass Muslims in the name of IS; Mohsin is innocent and has no relation with any anti-social element. Mohsin should be released soon,” he tweeted.

Khan’s tweet triggered war words with BJP youth leader Shehzad Poonawalla slamming him. “Aamanatullah attacks NIA and defends terror….,” he wrote on his timeline a few minutes ago.

“If he was raising funds, he should have had lots of money. The day before yesterday, he messaged me to ask for ₹ 4,000 to do a coding course,” one of his sisters told NDTV.

“He was very helpful. He used to do social service, collecting donations and distributing food grains to the poor during Covid lockdown,” she said.

“On 6th August, NIA searched the residential premises of accused Mohsin Ahmad presently residing in Japani Gali, Jogabai Extension, Batla house, New Delhi and a permanent resident of Patna, Bihar and subsequently arrested him in the case pertaining to online and on ground activities of proscribed terrorist organization ISIS,” an NIA spokesperson said, reported news18.com.
