“This road is very old and we have been using it for the last more than 50 years. And we were told that our ancestors also used the same road,” said Tahir Md, a resident.

He said it was on last Friday when efforts were made to erect an iron gate at the entrance. However, he said, timely intervention failed the moved with some residents even grabbing videos and photos which later on made to the social media. In the photos it can be seen that residents are involved in animated debate. Women residents were vocal and pleaded with Jamia administration to not close the road as it would cause hardship to them.

Zakir Nagar Councillor Shoaib Danish also turned up at the spot. In a photo shared by residents, a meeting with Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan was also held.

Several post bearers of Ghafoor Nagar Residents Welfare Association said they will even approach the court to get justice as the papers are in their favour.

The OT learned after interacting with some Jamia officials that the university was planning to secure its area for safety purpose. Sources said the iron gate was being put to avoid misuse of its land by residents for illegal parking and at night a small gate would be kept open. However, residents were not convinced and said there is no need of putting iron gate as it is general passage used by local residents for years.

They said they were ready to discuss the issue with the authorities if they wish to.
