Fire in Okhla’s well-known furniture shop, the Furniture Point, broke out early Saturday morning in Shaheen Bagh, according to residents.

The fire was doused and nobody was hurt, said the source. The furniture shop owner said expensive items were destroyed but he said he was lucky that no casualties were reported at the shop next to Wow gym at tokher No.6, Shaheen Bagh.

It was in the morning at 7 am when smoke started bellowing from the shop when it was closed following which residents rushed and fire brigade was informed which turned up on time to douse the fire, said residents.

Expensive furniture kept in the shop were gutted, said the owner of the shop. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be known but residents standing in the shop said it was due to short circuit.

Residents heaved a sigh of relief that the fire didn’t spread in the building with several residential floors above the furniture shop. With summer coming, residents said it is time to stay alert as they recalled a fire incident in Abul Fazal Enclave a few years ago when several people had died after a high-rise building had caught fire with two children even perishing in the fire.

Residents also recalled the Zakir Nagar fire in which several people were rescued with some even being reported to have sustained serious fire injuries.
