Okhla resident latest victim of electricity bill scam, know how much money he lost

In the digital age, fraudsters are lurking in the virtual world to deceive you. The case in point is of one Jamia Nagar resident who has become latest victim of electricity bill scam. According to the resident’s friend, it was a just two days ago when he received a message on his WhatsApp saying “pay dues for electricity supply, failing which the power will be cut by 9.30pm”.

The resident got alarmed and called on the given number with the caller asking him to pay the bill and give access to his mobile, said the victim’s friend, adding that his friend without suspecting something fishy followed the instructions and with time Rs 40,000 was withdrawn from his account. By that time he realised that he has become victim of electricity bill fraud it was too late and hence he immediately switched off his phone to deny the person access to his screen, said the resident, declining to reveal name of the person.

It could not be known whether the resident filed any complaint or not. However, it has been noticed that many people have been receiving such fake SMSs and WhatsApp messages.

BSES has alerted people to be wary of such messages that are sent with a clear intention of duping innocent people.

“Beware of fraudulent calls & messages, prompting consumers to pay electricity bills using suspect calls & messages. We request consumers to remain alert and pay their electricity bills only through bonafide platforms like BSES WhatsApp, BSES Website, Mobile App and E Wallets etc,” tweeted the discoms.
