The reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained. Nobody was hurt in the fire at S block near Umar Farooque Masjid, Jogabai Extension, at 3.00 pm. Over 35 shanties were gutted and five cattle died in the fire, said sources.

Former Zakir Nagar Councillor Shoaib Danish told the OT that he also rushed to spot and started pouring water to douse the fire.

In a few minutes time fire brigade also turned up and the fire was brought under control, said residents. Later on Danish told the portal that the fire has been extinguished. By then videos had surfaced on the social media showing Danish actively participating in the efforts to douse the fire.

There were no human casualties in the incident, said officials. A call about the fire in a slum cluster in Batla House area was received at 3:15 pm and 11 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Five cattle died in the incident, Director of Delhi Fire Services Atul Garg said.

“Around 35-40 huts had caught fire, which was doused by 4:40 pm,” he said.

Till the filing of the report, Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan announced on the social media that operation to help the needy has started.
