When will Jamia Nagar residents get piped drinking water?

Despite promises by local leaders, Jamia Nagar residents are heavily dependent on bottled water to quench their thirst. For years the area still year to have piped drinking water.

According to Okhla Vihar residents, when years ago pipe was laid in their area they were happy that they might be the first in Jamia Nagar to quench their thirst with piped water supply but their jubilation was short lived as supply is yet to begin. However, they are hopeful that things might improve.

But residents of other areas like Shaheen Bagh, Abul Fazal Enclave and other areas in Jamia Nagar are not so lucky as pipe is yet to be laid.

Their only hope is statement issued by Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on June 4, 2019, in which he had promised piped drinking water to all households in Delhi by 2024.

Many residents said we should wait till 2024 and see what happens. Until then residents will continue to purchased water from the locality and only hope for the best to happen.

“Our engineers have successfully plugged leakage of water and theft has also been controlled to a large extent. With the same amount of water we have been able to improve the management. Illegal tankers have been cracked down upon. I am optimistic that by 2024, every single household will have access to 24×7 drinking water through taps,” Kejriwal had then said.

While inaugurating a 50—MGD water treatment plant of Delhi Jal Board in Dwarka Sector 16C in 2018, Kejriwal said: “There is still a major part of Delhi where people don’t get water through pipeline and they have to depend only on water tankers. We have set a target of providing water to every household through pipeline in five years. DJB officials will prepare a blueprint of this project.”

The CM said his government is also working on rainwater harvesting system to be implemented in Yamuna and other areas so that there is no water shortage in the national capital and “we don’t have depend on neighbouring states“.

“The population of Delhi is increasing and there will be shortage of water in coming years. Now, Delhi gets water from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and other nearby states, but after some time, these states would say they cannot supply more water, so we will have to arrange water for us on our own,” he said.

“There is a lot of rains in Delhi, but rainwater flows into sewers that’s why there is a flood like situation in Yamuna some time. If we store rainwater, we can be able to resolve water problem till a limit in Delhi. I request DJB officials to prepare a blueprint so that we don’t have to take water from neighbouring states,” he said.
