Markets closed, roads wear deserted look on day 1 of weekend curfew
On the first day of weekend curfew in Delhi, markets were shut and busy roads wore a deserted look on Saturday, according to residents. It was on Friday night (10pm) when weekend curfew was imposed to curb Covid spread as the city registered more than 17,000 positive cases on Friday.
Delhi on Saturday reported 20,181 fresh Covid cases, the highest single-day rise since May last year. Also, seven people died from the infection in the 24 hours.
Due to heavy rain, many residents preferred staying inside only stepping out for some essential work.
Batla House market, which is usually very crowded in normal days, was empty. A resident, who went out for some essential work, said the road wore a deserted look with only a few e-rickshaws seen on the road. Pharmacy shops were open.
In the morning there was some confusion on what is open or not. However, as the day passed people came to know that only essentials were allowed.
A Batla House resident said the market was empty with only a few shops selling essentials open.
Many residents preferred to stay at home as cases increased and said it was the right move by the government to break the virus chain and cur Covid surge.
All government officials except for those engaged in essential services will work from home. 50 per cent workforce of private offices will work from home.
