Lawyers mourn death of Okhla-based young legal eagle

The death of young legal eagle Jamal Akhtar has left the legal fraternity in Delhi, including Okhla and other places, in deep shock. And to mourn his death, alumni of Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia, organised Quran recitation and prayer meet on January 23 at Iqra Masjid, Jasola.

Jamal, an alumnus of Jamia, who used to reside in Okhla Market, died when he was in Aligarh a fortnight ago after suffering cardiac arrest, according to residents who knew the family for years.

His body was taken to his hometown Devaria near Gorukhpur, said a Jamia alumnus.

Jamal passed out from Jamia in 2008 and had 14 years of practice.

Remembering him, lawyer Mohd Parvez, a pass out from Jamia in 2007 said Jamal was his immediate junior.

“He was a nice man and a close friend. It was shocking for all of us. And we will visit his hometown. He was a core group member. He was a budding criminal lawyer. He worked with many senior advocates. He represented government of Delhi in criminal cases.”

Jamal joined Law faculty of Jamia in 2003, and completed his degree (BA LLB) in 2008. During his stay at Jamia, Jamal was elected as vice president of Students’ Association, Law Faculty. He enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 2008 and was subsequently appointed as a Counsel for Delhi High court legal Aid committee, said his friend.

He was socially active, said lawyer Aman Usman.
“Jamal was not only a learned professional but also a loving husband, a caring father, a reliable friend and above all a very kind hearted person,” said Usman, an alumnus of Jamia.

Jamal has left behind two children and a wife.
