After seven weeks of lockdown due to Covid, Delhi was unlocked today with the partial hustle and bustle returning to the markets in Okhla.

In Batla House, the heart of Okhla, shops were opened and people too were seen on the streets. It was not known how much business roared but people were seen following Covid norms. Many people stayed in homes for safety.

A Batla House resident who visited the market at 5 pm said shops were opened but the usual hustle and bustle was missing maybe due to hot weather. In Shaheen Bagh too the market area was opened with some turning up.

It was on April 19 when Covid-induced lockdown was imposed in Delhi after coronavirus cases had soared. And as cases started decreasing, the unlocking process was started in Delhi on May 31, when the government allowed only construction and factory activities.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said: “Many activities are resuming in Delhi from today. But take all the necessary precautions to prevent coronavirus infection – wear a mask, maintain social distancing and keep washing your hands, do not lax at all.”

While addressing online press, Kejrwial on May 28 said: “We have to maintain a balance between controlling the spread of Covid-19 and allowing economic activities.”

Markets and malls were allowed to open on an odd-even basis from 10 am to 8 pm.

However, many places continue to be closed. Cinemas and theatres, along with any shop pertaining to entertainment/amusement services have not been permitted to operate. Moreover, gyms, spas, salons and barber shops are not allowed to function yet. The government had said a decision regarding this would be taken soon.

Restaurants and bars except home delivery/take away will remain closed for now.
