Drug addicts and alcoholics are always in search of quiet spaces for their activities. In Okhla too there are many such places.

According to residents, Batla House graveyard has become a safe haven for such elements as market association post bearer Md Waseem said one can find littered empty bottles and intoxicating medicines inside the graveyard ground.

It is not exactly known how many people turn up on a daily basis but activists, like Md Sagheer, who have been at the forefront of fighting against drug abuse in the locality, said empty places are always used by such elements. Following which, Md Waseem said the Batla House Market Association has written a letter to the administration asking them to keep the gates of two graveyards locked all the time only to be used when bodies come for burial.

He said as the gates are open 24X7 miscreants use it as a hiding place for alcohol and drugs after sunset.

After three cases of youths dying of drug overdose, residents and activists are deeply concerned and a few days ago a defunct Jamia Nagar Coordination committee has become active to address the issue.

Besides, ECM headed by Syed Hashmi too has organised several marches in the localities creating awareness about the menace.

A general meeting of Jamia Nagar coordination committee and RWA Abul Fazal Enclave was jointly organised on June 4 where activists and residents brainstormed for minutes to find a solution to the burning issue.
