The nation mourns the passing of Professor Allauddin Ahmad, a distinguished academician, scientist, and visionary leader who dedicated his life to advancing education, research, and public service for the marginalised.

Former Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, he passed away on October 28, 2025, in Patna. He also served as a member of Mushawarat and led Jamia Hamdard as its Vice-Chancellor from February 1, 1995, to January 31, 2000.

Born on January 15, 1936, Professor Alauddin Ahmad guided Jamia Hamdard with exemplary dedication.

“During his tenure, Professor Ahmad led the university through significant academic expansion, infrastructural growth, and enhanced national and international visibility,” said Md Tauhid Alam.

With a strong foundation in pharmacology and agricultural sciences, he combined scientific insight with administrative acumen, shaping higher education with vision and purpose.

“His leadership strengthened Jamia Hamdard’s research foundations, promoted interdisciplinary collaboration, and ensured that innovation stayed aligned with the university’s ethical and humanistic values,” said the university in a statement.

Deeply committed to nurturing young minds, Professor Ahmad believed education should cultivate intellect and empathy, inspiring generations of students and scholars to pursue excellence with purpose.

Before joining Jamia Hamdard, he served as Vice-Chancellor of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu and Kashmir, and as Deputy Director General at the Indian Council for Agricultural Research, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India.
During his tenure at Jamia Hamdard, he was also elected President of the Association of Indian Universities.

Jamia Hamdard Vice-Chancellor Professor (Dr) M Afshar Alam expressed deep sorrow over his passing and said Professor Ahmad’s warmth, humility, and integrity earned him the affection and respect of colleagues across academia.

“The Jamia Hamdard community mourns his loss deeply, yet his vision and ideals will continue to guide the institution he served with passion,” said the VC.

The university also extended its deepest condolences to his bereaved family and prayed for his eternal peace.

Muslim leader Navaid Hamid wrote: “I’m shocked to hear about the demise of Professor Allauddin Ahmad, former VC of Jamia Hamdard and member of Mushawarat. During his tenure, he provided exemplary leadership, leading the university through academic expansion, infrastructural development, and greater national and international visibility. His death is my personal loss, as we worked passionately for the empowerment of the Muslim community. On my request in 1999, he agreed to be a founder member of MOEMIN.”

He described him as a noble soul with a humble and down-to-earth personality.
