VC Najma raises issue of medical college-cum-hospital on 102nd Foundation Day, urges Govt to grant approval

Jamia Millia Islamia, an institution born out of the freedom struggle and non-cooperation movement completed glorious 102 years of its establishment today. NCC cadets of the university presented a marvellous Guard of Honour to the Chief Guest of the function Dr. Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State for Education, Govt. of India, JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar and Guest of Honour of the function Dr Upendra Giri, Founder & CEO, Upbuild Global Inc., California, USA.

The inaugural function of the Foundation Day Celebration began today with the unfurling of the Jamia Flag by the Vice Chancellor Akhtar at the lawns of Dr. M. A. Ansari Auditorium of the university followed by the singing of the song ‘Ye Jamia Ka Parcham..’ by students.

Sarkar started his address by congratulating the teaching and non-teaching fraternity, students, alumni and all stakeholders. “Since its establishment, the university has achieved uncountable milestones, which will remain memorable and significant for the nation. I congratulate you all, it is a matter of great pride that the institution has passed another milestone,” he said.

The Minister further said Jamia is among one of the best universities in India. The students, research scholars, and teachers have been constantly excelling in studies, teaching, research, and other academic activities. “I take the opportunity to applaud the efforts of Akhtar, who is efficiently working for the betterment and excellence of the university,” he said.

Akhtar highlighted the achievements of the university in the last few years. She said the university appeals to the government to grant approval for setting-up a medical and nursing college which is highly required not only for this area but will also be useful for the people living in adjoining areas like Noida.

“Jamia has always taught progressiveness, enlightenment, unity in diversity. The university always speaks about coexistence and patriotism. We have been conducting national and international seminars and conferences on nation building and society and has always played its distinctive role in making these dreams come true” the Vice Chancellor said.

Inside the auditorium the function began with the singing of Jamia Tarana by students followed by the felicitation of the Chief Guest and other dignitaries. Prof. Farhat Nasreen, Department of History & Culture, JMI, Mirza Shaina Beg & Navi Hasan, students of the university enthralled the audience with their powerful speeches on the glorious history and 102 years journey of JMI.
Minister and the Vice Chancellor felicitated 21 researchers of the university who were featured in the Stanford University’s coveted global list of top 2% of scientist. Twelve research scholars of the university selected for Prime Minister Research Fellowship (PMRF) recently, successful students of Residential Coaching Academy (RCA), JMI who cleared UPSC Civil Services Exam and Prof. Zahid Ashraf who received Visitors Award recently was also felicitated on the occasion.

Guest of Honour of the function Giri said: “I am feeling proud to learn about the achievements of JMI in last 102 years and getting nostalgic also as I am an alumnus of this institution.”

With his energetic address he motivated everyone to work hard to take the university to greater heights further. Prof. Nazim Husain Jafri, Registrar, JMI presented a vote of thanks followed by the singing of National Anthem by the gathering.

In the second half a number of cultural activities were organised in the auditorium. Ramchander Jangra, Rajya Sabha MP, Haryana and Prof. Asim Ali Khan, Director General, CCRUM, Govt. of India were the Chief Guests of the programme.

Dean Students Welfare Prof. Ibrahim and his team, NSS volunteers and NCC cadets worked hard to make the program a highly successful one.
