Prof. Mohammad Shabbir, former JMI EC Member passes away

Prof. Mohammad Shabbir who finished his term as a Visitor’s nominee in the Executive Council of Jamia Millia Islamia last March has passed away. He had a three-year term from March 22, 2018 to March 21, 2021.

Prof. Shabbir was serving as a distinguished member on several important committees of Jamia Millia Islamia.

He was the Ambedkar Chair Professor at Aligarh Muslim University.

Prof. Shabbir was a former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Aligarh Muslim University and as a distinguished legal luminary was formally associated with Columbia International College and Islamic University of Malaysia. He enjoyed the reputation of an institution builder and was efficiently networked in the legal circles of India. He also served as an acting Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University.

As a law Professor he authored several books and was a regular contributor to an online legal series.

He is survived by his wife and a son and a daughter.

Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia in her condolence message mourned the loss to the institution and highlighted his stellar role as an Executive Council Member in shaping university’s policy and executive decisions.
