Jamia Millia Islamia student allegedly commits suicide

A former MBA student of Jamia Millia Islamia allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan rod at his flat in Gafoor Nagar on Saturday night, according to a post doing the rounds in the locality.

Investigation is going on to find the exact nature of his death and police version is still awaited. Jamia authorities are yet to issue a statement as the incident happened at night. As family resides in Bihar, their version could not be known.

A few minutes ago Jamia PRO said: “I am told by the Chief Proctor that he is ex student of MIB.” The OT is awaiting for more details about the student after which changes in the copy will be made.

The incident left residents of Gafoor Nagar deeply upset.

UPDATE: Police said Ebaduddin, 25, a native of Sultanganj in Patna, allegedly hanged himself from the ceiling of his flat, adding his family has been informed. The incident came to light on Saturday when neighbours called the police.

No suicide note has been found and the reason behind his death is being ascertained, they said.

“We have recorded statements of the relatives and no foul play has been found or suspected. The body has been kept at AIIMS mortuary. He was studying at Jamia and lived alone at Gafoor Nagar,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Rajesh Deo said.

Md Tahir, RWA post bearer of Gaffor Nagar, said words spread in the locality that a Jamia student residing in a flat has committed suicide. Later on police and officials reached the spot, he said, adding that he was deeply saddened with the development.

Other residents too expressed their grief and said the probe result will establish what really happened.

A journalist aware of the development said the youth name was Ebaduudin and he was from Bihar. He said a friend of the deceased told him that the MBA student had also an offer of Rs 12 lakh package annually in a private bank, a claim that the OT is unable to authenticate.

Many residents are trying hard to accept it that the young student killed himself.

In 2019, a 22-year-old student of Jamia had allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his rented accommodation in Okhla Vihar, police had said then. Irfan BK, a first-year student of Master of Arts (Psychology), was from Kerala, they said.

Okhla resident S Fouzul Azeem ‘Arshi’ said it is important that children are counseled never to ever think to take extreme step as life is a gift by Allah. It is sad to see to see such cases taking place in Muslim-dominated Okhla, he said.
