Jamia Millia Islamia has slipped in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 rankings. In 2024, the university proudly announced it had secured the 3rd position in the universities category. That marked the third consecutive year Jamia ranked among the country’s top three universities.

The Ministry of Education releases the NIRF rankings every year.

However, in a press release issued by Jamia on September 4, 2025, the university said it has retained its 13th position in the ‘overall’ category and has been ranked 4th in the ‘university category’ in the NIRF India Ranking 2025.

The reason behind the one-point slip in this year’s ranking compared to 2024 could not be ascertained.

Worth noting that this year, the Ministry of Education has ranked institutions on 17 categories, introducing the SDG or sustainable rankings. In this category, JMI has bagged third position among Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) institutions.

Vice Chancellor Jamia Prof. Mazhar Asif said: “It is a matter of great honour for us that JMI has retained its position among the top 5 institutions of the country and has been ranked 13th in the overall category in the NIRF Ranking 2025. We have done exceedingly well among the SDG institutions and hope that we can improve our position in the disciplines of Engineering, Management, and Dentistry given our dedicated team of faculty members in these coveted branches.”

“We hope to work on some of the challenges that came in our way so that we can improve our rankings next year and continue to take the 105-year-old institution to newer heights,” Asif said.

In the ‘Architecture and Planning’ category, Jamia has been ranked at the 5th position and bagged the 8th position in Law among all participating institutions. The university has been ranked 17th in Dental and 20th among all research institutions. In Engineering, Jamia has been ranked at the 24th position and 28th in Management.

This year’s rankings have been released across 17 categories – overall, universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, open universities, skill universities, state public universities and SDGs institutes.

NIRF rankings evaluate institutions on the following parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources; Research and Professional Practices; Graduation Outcomes; Outreach and Inclusivity and Perception. This is the tenth edition of NIRF.

NIRF Ranking 2025 reflects that Jamia continues on its trajectory of progress and growth in all teaching and learning parameters and in the area of research.

It is worth mentioning that from 83rd rank in 2016 the university reached to 3rd rank in 2022 and for the last two years it has maintained its position.
