While Pro Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Gulrez has been serving as the interim Vice-Chancellor since Mansoor’s resignation, the executive council of AMU has identified five promising candidates for the position. One of these candidates is Professor Furqan Qamar from Jamia Millia Islamia.

Professor Qamar has a noteworthy academic history, having previously served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Rajasthan and being the inaugural Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh.

The competition for the position of Vice-Chancellor at AMU also includes several other candidates. These candidates are Professor (Dr) Faizan Mustaffa, Dr Naima Gulrez, who is the spouse of the current acting Vice-Chancellor, and the Principal of AMU’s Women’s College and Professor Kayyum Hussain.

Besides, Professor MU Rabbani, a senior professor specialising in cardiology and a member of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Department of Biochemistry at AMU, is also in contention.

Professor (Dr) Faizan Mustaffa currently holds the position of Vice-Chancellor at Chanakya National Law University in Patna. He has an extensive track record in academia, having served as the founding Vice-Chancellor of the National Law University, Orissa, and having led NALSAR University of Law for a decade.

These candidates will be introduced to the AMU Court for discussion and eventual selection.
The AMU Court will review their credentials and choose three candidates for further assessment.

From an initial pool of 20 names put forward for consideration by the executive council, these five candidates were selected through a voting procedure involving the use of ballot papers.
