SDMC increases capacity of cremation grounds

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) said it has augmented the existing capacity of all 9 cremation centres/burial grounds.

“Platforms/pyres are being increased at all cremation centres and burial grounds. Earlier there were 436 platforms/pyres were reserved to perform last rites of deceased Covid patients which now has been increased to 507.

“On April 1, capacity of Covid platforms/pyres was 162 which have now been increased to 507. Additional 80 pyres are constructed at Sarai kale khan cremation ground to cope up with demand.

“Platforms/pyres have mainly been increased at SDMC-run cremation centres located at Punjabi Bagh, Subhash Nagar, Lodhi Road, Sarai Kale Khan, Dwarka Sector 24 and Green Park.

“Public Health Department of the SDMC has been monitoring the situation and making additional arrangements as per the need. SDMC is augmenting the existing capacity so people could not wait for long while performing last rites.

“In addition to this, enough quantity of wood has been made available at cremation centres for performing last rites of bodies. SDMC stands with the citizens during such a crucial time and makes all possible efforts for their convenience,” it said.
