Okhla activists plan Bal Niwas for children who lost parents to Covid-19

Some Okhla-based activists, who run NGOs, said they are planning to open a Bal Niwas for children who lost their parents to Covid pandemic.

“We ask sustainers (donors) to support the initiative. We had rented a flat last month. We have been building it. Now electrical work, furniture, mattresses, beds, kitchen utilities remain. So come forward for the noble cause and help us build the Bal Niwas in Khizrabad,” said Khedmat’s Faiz Ilahi.

He said the initiative is a joint effort of Adhikar Foundation, Naaz Foundation and Khedmat.

“My NGO has been working for uplift of the downtrodden in Okhla. We have placed several piaos (drinking facilities) across the locality and have plans to have more in Shaheen Bagh and Abul Fazal Encalve. Also, we run sewing and stitching training centre for girls and from time to time gift them sewing machine to empower them,” he said.

The Centre is also providing free education, monthly stipend for children who lost parents to Covid-19.

The ‘PM CARES for Children’ scheme is applicable to children who have lost both parents or surviving parent or legal guardian/adoptive parent(s) in the pandemic between March 11, 2020 and December 31, 2021.

Among many measures announced by the Centre for children who lost both their parents to Covid-19, under the ‘PM CARES for Children’ scheme are free school education, assistance in getting loans for higher studies, health coverage under Ayushman Bharat scheme and a monthly stipend after attaining the age of 18, reported the national dailies.
