With an aim to provide excellent education with advanced infrastructure and to inculcate a habit of reading among the children enrolled in its 539 primary schools, South Delhi Municipal Corporation said it has been making all efforts in this direction.

In the New Education Policy 2020, developing the interest of reading books has been considered an integral important step for the development of various basic skills among children. In this series, South DMC, in association with the NGOs, has brought improvements in the infrastructure of the libraries already existing in their schools and has started making them equipped with more attractive as well as student-friendly books, it said.

Gyanesh Bharti, Commissioner SDMC, has shown deep interest in setting up excellent libraries in the corporation schools and bring about a positive change in the lives of children by motivating them to read good and inspirational books, it said.

The civic body has been establishing well equipped libraries inside the school premises. In collaboration with NGOs-Angelica Foundation, Room to Read and Katha-SDMC’s Education Department has set up well-equipped and readers-friendly libraries in as many as 125 schools.

Bharti said when a child goes through a good book, a new door of knowledge opens up for him.  He said that books in these libraries are available for students of all ages studying in the SDMC schools. He hoped that this silent revolution which is underway will yield long-lasting positive impact on children and society at large.

The Education Department, joining hands with Angelica foundation, has set up 56 libraries in Central Zone, 39 schools in South Zone and 30 schools in West Zone while efforts are being made to open similar libraries in Najafgarh Zone also. Prominent places where libraries have been made operational in corporation schools are Tughlakabad Extension, Kalkaji, Premnagar, Ashram, etc in Central Zone, Ambedkar Nagar, Khanpur, Deoli, Pushp Vihar, RK Puram, etc in South Zone and Tagore Garden, Raghubir Nagar, Subhash Nagar, etc in West Zone.

The civic agency, with the help of NGO Room to Read and Katha, has started 73 ‘Reading Corner’ in the primary schools where there is no separate room/space for running a full-fledged library.  In order to develop library-related infrastructure in every school, the SDMC will build a fully equipped library in each school in the coming future. In this direction, the future action plan is being prepared with the school principals.
