Expressing deep concern over the communal clashes in Delhi’s Jahangpuri, Maulana Mahmood Asa’d Madani, the president of Jamiat Ulama–i-Hind, termed it a failure of law & order machinery and demanded a fair inquiry into the whole incident.

Maulana Madani said the investigating agencies should discharge their responsibilities honestly and fairly and should try to get to the bottom of the matter.

“All these activities had started in Jahangirpuri on the morning of the incident day, yet the negligence of the police administration and its failure to clamp down on the miscreants in the religious procession is reprehensible,” he said.

On the direction of Maulana Madani, a five-member delegation of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind led by Advocate Supreme Court Muhammad Noorullah reached Jahangirpuri on Teusday and met the Imam of the affected mosque and responsible people from both the communities living in the C. block region.

“The delegation included Maulana Azeemullah Siddiqui Qasmi, Maulana Ghayyur Ahmad Qasmi, Qari Saeed Ahmed and Advocate High Court Abdul Ghaffar. Local officials Khalil Ahmed, Sheikh Abdul Qadir, Mohammad Jahangir, and Maulana Ramzan, recounted that the procession approached the mosque twice before the final time at 6 pm,” said the statement.

“But they were convinced to change their routes. When the religious procession reached here through Hussain Chowk at 6 pm, it became more enraged. The miscreants who were part of the procession started hurtful slogans against the Muslim community. When local people told the miscreants to go away, they flagged swords on them, then the situation became out of control until the police interfered with heavy arms. They called that if police was active, this situation would have not take place.”

Meanwhile, the delegation of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind also met the families whose members have been arrested by the police in connection with the case, including the wife of Ansar Ahmed, a social worker, said the statement.

“She told that her husband is innocent and he does good deeds and social work for all Hindus and Muslims here. Even that day he went to convince the people to not fight off. The residents handed over to the Jamiat delegation a list of 14 people and their Aadhaar cards who got arrested. Their relatives have requested the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind for the delivery of justice,” it said.

Also, a delegation of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) which also visited the violence hit area on Tuesday, said Jahangirpuri communal violence is a result of police inaction, after visiting the affected areas of northwest Delhi.

The delegation which was led by JIH Vice President, Prof. Salim Engineer, met the affected families at their residence and interacted with local people to know the complete information and all facts about the situation, it said.

JIH National Affairs Secretary Mohammed Ahmed, JIH Delhi state President Abdul Wahid, and other JIH office-bearers were part of the delegation. The delegation also met the senior police officials there and apprised them of all the facts.

After returning from the visit, the delegation, in a media statement, today said whatever happened in Jahangirpuri and the manner, in which the violence occurred, clearly suggested that it was not a sudden outbreak, but deliberately planned, it said.

The delegation said: “Processions were taken out twice before the violence on that day to spoil the atmosphere. When the third one was taken out during the exact time of Iftar and prayers, some people suddenly came out with drumming and playing loud music. Same people, who were part of the procession, started aggression with shouting provocative slogans. Some of them armed with weapons, openly brandished during the procession, according to locals. The delegation also came to know that permission for the procession had not been taken and adequate police force had not been deployed to control any untoward incident.”

Commenting on the role of the police, the delegation pointed out that the violence could have been avoided had the police done their job properly.

The delegation has demanded the police to avoid unilateral action and arrest the culprits as soon as possible and take stern action against whoever is guilty without any discrimination.

The delegation informed that Jamaat-e-Islami Hind is in touch with the victims, focusing on the basic needs of the people of the affected areas and working to meet their legal and other immediate needs.

Talking to media persons during the visit, Prof. Saleem called the violence very painful, tragic and an outcome of a planned conspiracy.
