ITR Filing 2025: Last date, penalty and all you need to know

Today is the last date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR). According to report, more than six crore people have filed returns. But, if anyone has difficulty in filing income tax returns on time due to a serious emergency, then there is a solution for that too.

He or she can ask for condonation of delay from the Income Tax Department. For this, the taxpayer has to first file his return and then apply through the e-filing portal. The reason has to be written clearly in the application and documents like hospital papers, bills or doctor’s certificate have to be given. The department will investigate the matter and if found correct, it can waive late fees and penalty.

The Income Tax Department gave this information on Saturday and thanked the taxpayers and professionals. The department wrote on the social media platform X: “Thank you taxpayers & tax professionals for helping us reach the milestone of 6 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) as of now and still counting.” The department also appealed that those who have not filed returns yet, should not wait for the last moment and complete the process immediately.

This time the deadline for filing ITR was earlier fixed as 31st July. But due to changes in the form and problems on the e-filing portal, it was extended to 15th September. The Income Tax Department said 24 hour support is being provided to help taxpayers. People can connect directly with the department through call, live chat and webex and get their problem resolved.

“To assist taxpayers for ITR filing, tax payment and other related services, our helpdesk is functioning on a 24×7 basis, and we are providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions & Twitter/X,” it said.

If a taxpayer misses today’s last date, then he also has options. He can file belated return. The deadline for this has been kept as 31 December 2025. However, late fees will have to be paid. This fee is Rs 1000 for those with income up to Rs 5 lakh and Rs 5,000 for those with income above Rs 5 lakh. Along with this, there will be some loss as well. Like business or capital gain loss will not be able to be carried forward.

Tax experts say that filing ITR on time is the safest way. Late filing not only poses a risk of penalty but also delays the refund process. This is why the department is constantly appealing to avoid the last minute rush and file the return before the deadline.

The Income Tax Department on Sunday (September 14, 2025) clarified that the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) has not been extended beyond September 15, rejecting claims circulating on social media about a further extension.

“A fake news is in circulation stating that the due of filing ITRs (originally due on 31.07.2025, and extended to 15.09.2025) has been further extended to 30.09.2025. The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025,” the Income Tax Department said in a post on X.

The department urged taxpayers to rely only on updates from its verified handle @IncomeTaxIndia and not to be misled by unverified posts.

On Saturday, the I-T department had shared that over 6 crore ITRs had already been filed for the Assessment Year 2025-26. It thanked taxpayers and tax professionals for their contribution in reaching this milestone.

“Thank you taxpayers & tax professionals for helping us reach the milestone of 6 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) as of now and still counting. We urge all those who haven’t filed ITR for AY 2025-26, to file at the earliest to avoid last minute rush. Let’s continue this momentum!” the department had said in a post on X.
