As prices of petrol soared, an Okhla resident shared receipt of fuel bought by his grandfather in 1977.

“Today we are buying fuel for around Rs 110 a liter. I found this receipt from my grandfather’s stuff: Rs 3.39 a liter in 1977 in Delhi,” wrote Riyazul Islam Hamza a few days ago.

It was way cheaper then, he wrote. “Yesterday, I went to the petrol pump in Delhi and in Rs 500 I couldn’t even buy even 5 liters whereas in 1977 my grandfather use to get the same amount for Rs 17,” he wrote days before the fuel prices were slashed by the Central Government.

His grandfather had died during the second Covid wave after contracting the infection.

On Friday, the Central Government announced to a cut in excise duty with slashing of local sales tax (VAT) rates with petrol price being further reduced by as much Rs 8.7 per litre and diesel by Rs 9.52 in BJP ruled States and UTs – from Ladakh to Puducherry.

The Union Government had on Wednesday cut excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 per litre and that on diesel by Rs 10 a litre to give reprieve to consumers battered by record-high retail fuel prices.
