Some beg on Okhla streets with placard ‘Syria, I want help’

A young woman with her small kid was seen sitting at the gate of a mosque in Jamia Nagar during Friday prayer, said a resident, adding that a man was also standing nearby.

Both of them were holding a placard written: “Syria, I want help.” Many people were seen giving them alms. Residents said two weeks ago they saw a hijab-clad woman holding a placard with Syria written on it.

The OT couldn’t verify whether they were from Syria or India or just using the Syria placard to earn sympathy from the locals. A resident said days ago he saw a burqa-clad woman standing somewhere at Okhla Head with the Syria placard.

They are not regulars in the locality but can be seen from time to time, said another resident.

The locality sees beggars from on daily basis, said residents, adding that at times they get irritating as they are outside eateries and shops begging.
