Due to tazia procession in Batla House today, the route has been diverted, according to residents.

Sudhar Trust head Md Saghir said as tazia procession is being taken out, the road from Okhla Head to Batla House has been closed. Also, people coming from Jamia road towards Batla House to Okhla Head should avoid it for a few more hours.

It is understood the restrictions will be there till 6 pm and once tazia procession moves towards its destination the road will be opened, he said.

Large number of residents turned up in Batla House to view tazia procession. Security was also upped with traffic police landing in the locality at Okhla Head and Batla House road to avoid traffic chaos.

For many residents, they turn up every year to have a view of the tazia procession. Across India, Muharram was held with tazia procession being taken out.

Muharram has a 10-day period when Muslims mourn the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, son of Hazrat Ali and Grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Also, the month of Muharram marks the beginning of the New Year in the Islamic lunar calendar.

The mourning period ends with Ashura, a day when Shia Muslims take out the procession and carry Tazia, a miniature replica of the tomb of Imam Hussain. On the day of Ashura, Tazias is carried to the cemetery for burial and many people also fast.
