It was on February 12 when, according to police, a PCR call was received at the New Friends Colony police station around 12 am regarding an unconscious person lying on the Sarita Vihar-bound carriageway near the flyover. After receiving the information, police personnel immediately rushed to the spot. However, they reportedly got stuck in a heavy traffic snarl and, in the meantime, received multiple calls from passersby reporting a serious accident and urging swift assistance.
Preliminary enquiries revealed that the accident took place between 12 am and 1 am on the intervening night of February 12 and 13, said the report. Investigators are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas and questioning witnesses to ascertain the exact circumstances under which the truck collided with the scooty.
The accused driver, a resident of Nuh in Haryana, has been detained, reported The Patriot. He has been working for the truck owner, identified as Rashid, for the last two years, police said, adding that both were known to each other and shared friendly terms, according to the newspaper. Police officials said the driver is being questioned to determine whether negligence, speeding, or any other factor contributed to the accident.
The truck was heading towards Badarpur at the time of the incident. Loaded with grocery items, it was travelling from Badli to Nagpur when the collision occurred. The driver has claimed that he possesses a valid driving licence and that the vehicle is insured. However, the documents are currently under verification, police said.
A crime team inspected the scene and collected evidence, including debris from the damaged scooty and parts of the truck, police said. Officials added that no helmets were found at the spot, reported The Patriot.
Police also stated that no cleaner or helper was present in the vehicle when the accident took place. Authorities have initiated legal proceedings under relevant sections of law, and further investigations into the incident are underway.
